Here is my poetic reply to goad the discussion: The party was gay, The creatures were brave But they have forgotten how to behave They don't realize that sniffing cocaine Is really bad… But who is to blame? If animals feel that it is alright You better not spoil Their orgy tonight!

Dear Molly, I am a little bit disappointed that my intent to entertain you with a practical discussion in crisp English language results in yawning. :-( I though this might be a wonderful opportunity to take part in interesting conversation. Of course we are not having an FCE tutorial here, and I wasn't promoting FCE drills in this topic. Once again, if you did not not notice my answer above I would like to repeat it here. I do not see anything wrong with entertaining topics. Sometime they are terrific, bright and marvelous! Usually English clubs are created to inspire English language discussion on different kind of topics. I find it fantastic that instead of just copy and pasting content from the Internet we are practicing good English here! I have a fundamental tenet that English languages comes first, and fun and entertainment comes second. I am not a taut person at all, trust me =). You might have noticed these discussions provide a valuable opportunity for me to use these new difficult words that I would like to add to my active dictionary. As for a relaxing massage I am a big fan of it especially after my BJJ training. Above in this topic Lady LG suggested to inquire you about this terrific massage. Tell me more about it!

  6. So that means you decided to agree to my wish partually. Let's be more consistent!

Dear LadyLG, I appreciate your prompt reply, and I am happy to participate in further discussion! This is a terrific rule, and that is one of the reasons I chose to take part in your peaceful talks. I am a true supporter of it. Well, of course you are not laughing at particular individual's mistakes. However try to look at it from the different perspective. This forum is public, even guests are able to read it, and the audience differs a lot. I am sure that most teenagers and even most young adults would not find a discussion of their mistakes offensive in any way. However, there is a group of individuals that are very sensitive to such issues simply because the older people get the more delicate they are towards their own mistakes. It took a great effort for some of them just to start their English studies mainly because they do not like to make mistakes on public. That is absolutely great I have no doubt that you did a great job on the previous pages answering on grammar and vocabulary issues. But I am not questioning that at all. I was just a little bit concerned about impression that some delicate students may have after reading the last pages of the topic. I do not see anything wrong with entertaining topics. Sometime they are terrific, bright and marvelous! I do not suggest to write about economic recession. You seem to have great students who are understanding and grateful. Totally agree with you on that matter. It is impossible to teach anybody English here however it is quite possible to encourage people for fruitful self studies. And it takes time. And effort. Usually English clubs are created to inspire English language discussion on different kind of topics. I find it fantastic that instead of just copy and pasting content from the Internet we are practicing good English. So lets stay friends and develop this fertile topic together! PS Does anybody know if it is possible to use apostrophe sign on this forum? It looks like the forum engine makes an automatic correction every time I try to use it, and without informal shortening my messages look too ceremonious. My apologies for that.
  8. Victorian, I have just noticed that you added another reasoning behind your argument eight hours after I replied to you. Сообщение отредактировал victorian: 03 Июль 2013 - 09:20 Would you please avoid this type of editing if we are having a discussion? I would really appreciate it because it's very impractical to scan messages backwards. It also breaks the logic of our conversation. Joining Grow Your English Dictionary topic may provide the following benefits for the participants: 1). Mutual encouragement and support It's quite the same as going to the gym with somebody else. You might have noticed that it is much more fun doing something together. 2). Providing motivation This topic could be a great motivational tool for anybody who is willing to work on his English. 3). Galvanizing forum activity Galvanizing is already in action: the topic is enlarging, and the pageviews are growing. BTW English Club topic also partakes some benefits because it was silent for almost a month and now it's back to life. Or if you would prefer the English Club was goaded by the humble topic starter. 4). Active dictionary growth I have already noticed that this method is working great for me. Why would not it work for anybody else who likes to get more practical with new words? So the point is the following. Working on something together is fun! This explanation stands mainly for the newcomers since you are already among active contributors and supporters.

IMHO making fun of student mistakes may discourage a lot of beginners who want to study English. Besides these tasks don't seem to have any educational value but provide entertainment for a very limited number of people. Making mistakes is quite natural if you are learning new stuff. Why don't we switch to tasks that are not capitalizing on someone's weaknesses?

  13. My words for today: 1. Taut - emotionally tense, not relaxed (about a person). Mr. McVeigh does not have a taut character at all. Taut situation. 2. Abscond - leave hurriedly and secretly, typically to avoid detection or arrest; flee; escape. As we know from the newspapers this well-known businessman obviously absconded from Cambodia to avoid possible custody. 3. Goad - to incite, to stimulate a reaction from the odject; a spiked stick used for driving cattle. There are several influential bloggers that are capable of goading huge corporations and even state authorities. I use this stick to goad my cow. Bye the way, I find it practical to create your own definitions for new words. This way I can memorise them much better.
  14. You're welcome! I am a strong believer that nobody is perfect and everybody on pushkino.org has English language issues to work on if they want of course. We should rather encourage each other then to point out mistakes only, because encouraging is much more fruitful. Undoubtly, we should work on the mistakes as well but let's do it in more productive way, e.g. (for example) you could wright your short story in this topic and we could discuss if there are any mistakes in it. Like I did it with my own story. You words are great and quite practical.
  16. To AnutaM: You did a great job! Keep working on your vocabulary. What are you words for today?
  17. This was one of my first assignment to prepare for TOEFL. I chose to prove that knowledge is a burden sometimes. If you would like to practice your English with me you could write the essay defending the opposite point of view. To make it fair you should stick to the time frame though. =) The assignment. Can knowledge rather be a burden or a benefit? Timing - 45 minutes, which exceeded the timeframe by 15 minutes. The essay. I do support the opinion which states that knowledge could be a burden. This could be true for numerous cases in our lives. Firstly, there is a good saying that describes the burden of knowledge: what is known can not be unknown. This saying could be applied to multiple cases where individuals would be happier not to know something. This general case could be supported by more specific situation in medical field of knowledge when patients are given an excessive treatment that does more harm then actual disease. My third supporting thesis is based on Dostoevsky's Rodion Raskolnikov character who could not psychologically handle his murdorous knowledge. Very often people have to gain knowledge that is neither wanted nor needed in order to leave happier lives. Some people would rather be unaware of certain information. For instance many spouses would rather not know that their beloved halves are cheating on them even if an actual cheating is happening. This is also true for people who deside not to watch the news on everyday basis since our TV channels are eager to show bloody happenings like wars, car accidents, murders and natural disasters. This kind of knowledge does not bring much happiness to our lives and has not any particular value. Hence some people try to avoid it as often as possible to make their information burden less harming. There are many showcases when medical knowledge about your internal organs could lead to more harm instead of a cure. This is very typical for older prostate cancer patients who are 60 years of age and older. Many recent studies prove that these patients would live longer and more comforable lives if their cancer was left untreated. That leads to the conclusion that rigorous check ups for prostate cancer are waste of time and money since the most probable outcome would be more pain and suffering if the results are positive. Burden of knowing that you killed an innocent person could be heavy as a rock. This is what Dostoevsky showed us in his famous Crime and Punishment novel. Novel's main charecter Rodion Raskolnikov killed innocent people trying to prove to himself that he is capable of doing such a violent act. However he obviously could not handle the consequenses of his crime. The knowledge burden was so heavy that it almost made him insane and ruined his life completely. Since his criminal deed happened, Rodion was not able to restore his soul's internal cancord. Despite people's constant reach towards new knowledge it is obvious that in some cases excessive or unwanted knowledge could present a threat to individuals. This is true for numerous situations in everyday's life when people choose not to know that their spouses are cheating or are not interested that a couple of days ago a young couple was killed in a bloody accident. Some medical procudures are proved to have rather negative consequences. And sometimes the burden of knowledge is so heavy it presents a threat to mental health as Raskolnikov case shows us. This text has some grammar mistakes most of which were typos made due to lack of time (you have only 30 minutes to write quite a long text). When you time your writing you can bring it very close to the actual exam format. The mistakes that I made during this assignment are highlighted in red. Despite ten grammatical mistakes this text got high marks because grammar is only one of eight assessment criteria. Otherwise, this essay is a good example of what is expected from you when you write GMAT test.
  18. Hi Alexm and welcome to the topic! It would be really appreciated if you stick to the topic theme which is working on your active dictionary growth. These corrections are not very helpful since they are off topic. Working on everything at once is rather impractical. We could start another topic to focus on grammar corrections if you wish. Just let everybody know that you are willing to commit to this and people will follow. You made a great point noting that ATM abbreviation is quite ambiguous (open to many interpretations). This is very true for almost every three letter abbreviation. Think about words that have many different meanings as well. However if you say ATM in public in any North American city people will always infer that you are looking for a cash machine. For further reference I would like to provide you with tons of ATM pictures from Google query. On the other hand, your example practically doesn't exist in speaking practice but is used in social media and chat interactions. Some contributors may find it pragmatic to copy and paste new words examples. Personally I don't think that this is an effective method. Nevertheless, everybody is different and has different ways to memorise new information. Besides this is still a good contribution to the topic because it lets others to familiarise with new words and expressions. If you consider it useless why do you bother to write here? I find it nascent and promising since I am getting used to these new difficult words. And last but not least, I'd like to thank you for providing me with an opportunity to use three of my new words.
  19. Hope everybody had a great weekend! I have to admit that I had an exceptional time together with my lovely family. But now let's return to the assignment. 1. Collusion - a secret agreement for an illegal purpose, conspiracy. Many are convinced that major oil companies reached a collusion in order to set up high gas prices. 2. Tenet - an opinion, belief, or principle held to be true by someone or especially an organization. In every free state there is a fundamental tenet that people have a right to belie in whatever they want to believe. 3. Nascent - just coming into existence and beginning to display signs of future potential; not yet fully developed. Mobile apps industry is nascent and very promising.
  20. Well done! You are welcome. Here is my share for today: 1. Rant - to speak or shout at length in an uncontrollable manner Rants and raves is another section of classifieds on craigslist. 2. Galvanize - to shock or stimulate into sudden activity This time media attention was intended to galvanize protest action. 3. Trite - lacking of freshness because of excessive repetition. Unfortunately, jokes and riddles were quite obvious and trite.
  21. Если старный закончился, вы получаете новый паспорт - все по стандартной процедуре. А ввобще, процедура получения нового паспорта ничем не отличается от процедуры замены паспорта в случае смены фамилии, например.
  22. My own three words for today: 1. Austere - grim or severe in manner or appearance. School principal was an austere old man. 2. Raconteur - a person who tells stories with skill and wit. Wayne Gertmenian is known to be a raconteur since his stories are always intriguing and fascinating. 3. Odium - hatred, dislike. Sometimes I think that there is too much odium among people these days.
  23. To AnutaM: Welcome to this productive topic. I'm very glad to see you here! Your set of words is absolutely fine because everybody learns his or her own words. By the way, "cash machine" is more often used in Europe while in North America they use abbreviation ATM. There is a funny mistake that even native Americans make regularly saying ATM machine because ATM stands for Automated Teller Machine. I believe that sharing additional information will help us learn new words even better.
